Expansive vs. Limiting Dialogue

Want to turn painful meetings into real collaboration? We’ve all been in meetings where it’s clear our perspective (especially if it's dissenting) isn’t welcome.

The leader (or the loudest voice) has already decided what’s true and “right.”

So what happens? People check out, ideas go unsaid, and frustration grows.

Here’s the truth: the way we dialogue shapes the results we get.

When we dominate to prove we’re right, we shut down collaboration and miss out on “what could have been.” And while we may not see it in the moment - others definitely do.

In my EMBA leadership class, we’ve been exploring the difference between expansive dialogue and limiting dialogue, and I wanted to share this quick reference.

These dynamics play out every day in teams:

✅ Expansive dialogue is collaborative and curiosity-driven. It opens space for innovation, strengthens trust, and leads to smarter decisions.

❌ Limiting dialogue is competitive and defensive. It shuts down perspectives, reinforces silos, and often leaves teams stuck.

Leaders set the tone. The way you show up in dialogue can either open the door to shared insight and innovation—or close it.

The Green Zone Self- Assessment

Green Zone Leadership offers a new framework to help senior leaders build high-trust teams, reduce burnout, and lead through challenge and change with clarity, courage, and presence.

Leaders operating from their Green Zone are more centered, strategic, and able to build trust and deliver results — even in fast-moving, high-stakes environments.

This tool helps you see the patterns that shape your leadership—when you’re operating from a grounded, expansive state versus when stress or reactivity narrow your field of vision. With greater awareness comes greater choice: the ability to respond with clarity, stay connected under pressure, and lead from steadiness rather than strain.

Take this assessment to learn more about how you operate in key dimensions:

  • Presence & Focus — Awareness of self, others, and group dynamics

  • Self-Regulation — Managing stress, emotions, and energy under pressure

  • Resilience & Recovery — Restoring energy and bouncing back

  • Relational Trust — Expansive vs. limiting behaviors

  • Intentional Action vs. Reactivity — Pausing to choose responses

  • Clarity & Purpose Alignment — Connecting to values and meaning
